“Great place this. Made better by universally friendly and helpful staff. I stayed for 3 nights. Did a mix of self catering and buying food/breakfast in the cafe. Room was basic but fine. Communal showers and toilet always clean and available. Bike store was safe and dry. Thoroughly enjoyed it.”

“Extremely comfortable and very hospitable! I enjoyed the Asian menu downstairs for lunch and appreciated that they were up late to let us in. Beds are amazing, and rooms were spacious. Felt like a great value as it’s close to a lot of good neighborhoods to visit.”

“One of the best YHA around. The rooms are what to expect in YHA but had a great bathroom. Members kitchen not great but very usable. The grounds however are what makes this place so special. Walking by the river in the morning and evening, particularly in the sun, is very special. The walk to dovedale is easy and skips the horrible busy carpark there. Overall feels like luxury at times with the ease and informal nature of YHA”

Elterwater Hostel

Elterwater, Ambleside LA22 9HX, United Kingdom

“We had a fabulous weekend stay here. The hostel is the perfect size for a group of 20-30. Lots of room to relax and eat and not too far from some local pubs where I'm told that the food is great. Really friendly managers and a lovely home cooked evening meal at a reasonable price. We also loved the selection of games and the views from the front. Highly recommend.”

“The best I can say about the room is… it’s a room. And it was clean. Very small, very noisy (single glazed window to high st didn’t shut properly). The location is perfect for easy travel 50yards from the tube and the Bar area looks like a cool place to hang out.”

“We recently stayed three nights here, due to the recent train strikes (Dec’, ‘23). Without the trains from March to Cambridge, my wife was unable to make the trip to work in the City. So we booked a few nights at the YHA. We wanted private rooms. And we got them. The rooms are, admittedly, very small (and the heating was seemingly fixed - we turned it off, but to no effect! - to max’! Our solution; windows open as wide as poss, fan on permanently!), but are clean and functional. It was - for us paups - expensive, but compared with normal hotel prices, it was a massive bargain. Mostly we cooked for ourselves, using the communal kitchen/dining areas. But on one occasion we had the English Breakfast, which was good. The location - very central (close to the railway station and the very cosmopolitan Mill Road [we had a fab curry at The Curry Queen] - is superb. And I was able to park free very nearby (just be sure to move your car before parking enforcement into effect!). The staff (and most other residents) were friendly. And we had an enjoyable little mini-break. Definitely recommended, esp’ for those on a tight budget.”

Travelodge Sunderland Central

Low Row, 1 Low St, Sunderland SR1 3PY, United Kingdom

“If you want any basic amenities, choose a different hotel! There was 1 towel between 2, no hair dryer, half the lights didn’t work! 1 iron and ironing board between the entire hotel! It’s a budget hotel but not budget prices! I’d pay the extra £15/20 and go to the premier inn or the holiday inn. It’ll make your stay a million times better!”

“thin walls and people running around upstairs from 8am. Shower is only slightly warm and like a tap from the wall, dont recommend. To get to our room we had to take 1 lift, walk round the halls, take another lift and walk round more halls, it was like a maze.. if a maze also had bright blue carpets with large gold diamonds on. Location is good, had to park elsewhere.”

“We stayed in a private room and thought highly of the experience. The location is convenient, near the station, in a quiet spot. The room was small, with a bunk bed. It was warm and the toilets and showers were conveniently located. Everything was clean and the staff was very helpful. You could order a choice of breakfast, continental or full English. We got one each and were satisfied. Nothing was a problem, for instance extra duvets which as it turned out, we didn't need. The only problem with the room was the tiny green alarm light in the ceiling which was disturbing at night. Next time we will know to have these eye-flaps with us.”

“WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. We arrived at the hotel to find the man at reception asleep on the sofa. Despite trying to wake him up, it took us calling the hotel phone to get him awake. He was rude and barely handed us a key before heading to the toilet and barely closing the door to our horror because everything could be heard. No information was provided regarding breakfast or anything else nor was any help offered with our bags. The only focus was given on us letting him know when we intended to check out so he knew to arrive at the correct time. We finally make it to our room. Though a clean room, the cables were untidy, the spotlight was coming out of its socket (health and safety concern) and the air con did not work. The shower does not work properly either and is barely adjustable. The outside garden area was also shoddy and not well kept. Heading out to dinner, we found the man outside smoking a cigarette and on the phone. As we were leaving after a discussion about us coming from Scotland, he proceeded to say he doesn’t like people from Edinburgh as they are “too posh”. The following morning, we found no milk in the room so we headed downstairs for breakfast only to be told there is no chef and he could offer us cereal but that the hotel was low on milk so we had to be careful in order to ensure there was milk for tomorrow. Note that when we did head down for breakfast, rather than greet us, he rudely gestured for us to come out and meet him there as he was having his first cigarette of the day. He proceeded to tell us we were the only guests and that it would be a loss were the chef to be in for only us. The worst part, he proceeded to sit with us (uninvited) and ranted about “the they/ them nonsense” and “how children in school should not be taught about sex education specifically about gay families”, how the “east india trading company helped india” and finally “India, China and Russia are laughing at Canadians and Brits because woke culture has ruined us”. There were many other xenophobic statements made that would likely hurt the sentiments of those reading this review. When we suggested that his opinions were his own and controversial and that we disagreed he raised his voice and claimed it was not controversial and an opinion, it was honesty that people need to hear. How this unprofessional, arrogant and rude man continues to have a job here astounds me. I would not recommend staying at this hotel.”

Cove - Minshull Street, Piccadilly

( 8 reviews )

6 Minshull St, Piccadilly, Manchester M1 3ED, United Kingdom

“Pros - It's a good central location, handy for shops, restaurants and train stations. The apartment I stayed in was spacious, well equipped and very clean. It's an excellent choice if, like me, you prefer to cook your own food, don't want to feel boxed in and want the convenience of a washer dryer (which of course hotel rooms don't usually include). The shower was great with excellent pressure and nice shampoo, conditioner and liquid soap provided. The bed and pillows were so comfortable and I notice many reviewers have said the same thing. Front desk staff were friendly, helpful and very welcoming. I had no need to contact the staff for anything during my 3 night stay and I was left undisturbed throughout - something I appreciated greatly and which added to the feeling of being in a home rather than hotel environment. Cons - Not a good choice for those who aren't self-sufficient when it comes to cooking, laundry etc (but that's not the Cove's fault! ;-) // There was no hand soap in the kitchen (but this is a minor niggle as pretty much everything else was provided - including non-bio laundry liquid, washing up liquid etc) // Although the windows kept the cold out, they didn't do the same for the noise. I could often hear people, vehicles etc late at night. However, again this is to be expected in a city centre location and is more than compensated for by all the reasons I gave as pros. Summary - I would definitely stay at the Cove again when I'm in Manchester!”

Halpin House (south Kensington)

Halpin House, 97 Queen's Gate, South Kensington, London SW7 5AB, United Kingdom

“The quality is reflected in the price 😅 I was in a two person room and it was pretty spacious. The room has a bed, wardrobe, and sink/mirror that are relatively clean. The beds are not the most comfortable but that’s fine. The communal showers are okay, kind of small, but make sure to bring shower shoes and a robe to make it easier for yourself to change in your room. 2 out of 3 of them always had a weird smell. The communal toilets are something to be left desired, not the cleanest and often ran out of TP. There’s two kitchens on the first floor. Not the best, but it gets the job done if you want to microwave something. A lot of construction going on during my stay here. Overall, do not expect a 5 star hotel. This will give you a place to sleep and shower when you stay in London for a really good price - that’s really it.”

Cityspace Borough
3.9
( 8 reviews )

200 Borough High St, London SE1 1JX, United Kingdom

“Positive: The Hotel is in a central location and the hotel is next to the Borough’s underground station so its no big deal to reach any sight. I stayed for 5 days in June this year. The bed was comfortable and the staff was kind. Negative: The room is very small and I heard some loud noises in the night from an air conditioner. The toilet was clean enough to be used but it could be better.”
