“You know a winner when there is a stream of regular patrons coming through the door and speaking to the servers on a first name basis. It’s a really small place with a simple menu, but they are great at what they make. I had the steamed dumplings, very juicy. I recommend the pan fried dumplings which were nicely crispy on the bottom. I liked how the rice cakes were not sticking together with just the right chewy texture. The Tan Tan noodles were flavourful and not too spicy. The shrimp tofu was great. The shrimp were perfectly done and the tofu was nice and soft. “Arrived at noon right when they opened, was told they were already sold out of a few things leaving only dumplings, so we ordered two different kinds of dumplings. Two minutes later the lady at the counter came over to tell us that it was actually a mistake and the “sold out” memo was from the night before. Too late though, we had already ordered. The only option for dumplings is to get them deep fried which is a shame - steamed would be SO MUCH BETTER. They also sell them frozen and they actually look like a good product, but at the restaurant they over fry them so the wrappers are way too hard. They also smother them in an overly sweet sauce so you can’t really taste the dumpling much. The space was nice though with lots of plants and natural light.”

“Spring Garden is an old school Chinese restaurant in New West. It's been a few years since I last visited and things don't look like they've changed much. The interior is nothing to write home about... The walls could use a new paint job and the seat covers are showing signs of much wear. But if that doesn't bother you, you can find some good eats here. Dropped by for dim sum. Free parking in the back. Don't be discouraged walking in through the back door. Some of the items we liked included the deep fried sesame balls with black sesame filling. These came our hot and fresh and the black sesame was perfectly oozing when we bit into them. The beef brisket rice roll hot pot was also really good with tender beef brisket and a yummy sauce. A few misses were the pork bean curd wraps (the filling just seemed very different than I'm used to). Other items were pretty much down the middle like the spareribs, siu mai, prawn spring rolls and the chili wontons (which aren't very spicy).”

“So last night we decided to give Fortune Palace another chance considering it was on our route through town. The vegetables have always been questionable. Again, last night was no different. The chow mein tasted old and the carrots were not fresh. None of us ate the carrots because on the outside they had a black, dark colour which tells me that they are not fresh. This isn’t the first review I have left, so in order to place this review, I had to delete the last one. I also didn’t bother calling because we found the owner was not the most friendly customer service savvy person in the past. The restaurant “Good Chef” is in our area and we have found their food a lot better and fresher. Safe to say we won’t be back to Fortune Palace unless new owners arrive, not even for convenience sake.”

“The food is fresh and tasty however, it's a cafeteria style restaurant that will confuse most people. You simply order and pay upfront and sit down at your table to wait for your food to be ready. Then you pick it from the counter and they have signs asking you to clean up afterwards. The curry beef and Hainanese chicken rice was amazing and we really enjoyed the chicken satay skewers. It's awkward that they ask for a tip when you pay when you do most of the work yourself, but I would still recommend eating here.”
