Abe Fisher

1623 Sansom St, Philadelphia, PA 19103, United States

“Having been here three times, Abe Fisher was a phenomenal experience each time, taking Jewish Ashkenazi food to unprecedented heights. I’m so sad they are closing. The menu during my last visit was the “Greatest Hits” menu. The service was incredible, Justin was the best waiter we ever had in Center City. We started off with the Roll Right In cocktail which was magical with the za’atar finish. Then the challah rolls came in with the spreads, each delicious. Then came the roasted sweet potatoes and the heirloom tomato caesar salad, both were very tasty. Then came the latke fries which are the best I’ve tried. Then came the veal schnitzel tacos which are some of the best tacos my gf and I have had in our lives. Finally, the short ribs arrived. What can I say? It’s perfect pastrami on another level. Unforgettable. Last came the desserts, of which my favorite was the bacon and egg cream. All in all, this spot will go down as one of the legendary places I’ve been to. The chefs behind the kitchen are truly some of the very best chefs in all of Philadelphia. Really sad they are closing. Apparently it’s due to marketing reasons as Abe Fisher’s sister restaurants Zahav and Laser Wolf are typically booked a month in advance where as Abe Fisher isn’t. The idea is to reopen Abe Fisher in a few years with the right timing so that it can be as busy as the sister restaurants. It’s all about timing really, as Abe Fisher opened too early and didn’t catch the heat from its subsequent sister restaurants. If I’m correct, then I can’t wait until the new Abe Fisher returns a few years later bringing back the Jewish Ashkenazi cuisine to the scene.”

“First time patron. We were celebrating my daughter’s birthday. The food was good, everything is $$$ Al-la-cart. The service was amazing; the staff checked on us and accommodated our request. While, I gave five stars. It’s important to note that they have this wonderful bread basket. However, no one made us aware that one of the breads had pork in it; it was pepperoni. We do not as a family or in our culture eat pork, and it was a little surprising that that wasn’t mentioned, or even inquired about as the menu was given us, or as the waitress took our order; just be careful if you have dietary restrictions. I ordered the chicken Milanese.. while it was good and I did give (five) stars the chicken was a bit over cooked. The rigatoni was great a little Parmesan Cheese would have made it better. My daughter ordered the sea bass and was well pleased. Great place for celebrating… we went around happy hour on a Monday and the place was full of patrons. Seating and service was quick. Lovely Ambience….Basement level…there is a elevator ( hidden), I say this, because if you have some mobility issues, you might wanna inquire about how to get to the elevator from the inside going down, we found out about it from the inside as we were coming up.”

”This review is based solely on the food not the service. Service was excellent. I would not recommend this place for anyone under 60 yrs old. The food is very bland. I ordered buffalo shrimp, what I received was 5 shrimp drenched in a hot sauce ketchup combo mix. Taste nothing like buffalo. On to the entrée, wanted to try something different so ordered shrimp francese over rice. What I got was a hot mess can't even describe it it was unsalted butter and a bunch of lemon but all you could taste was the lemon. I was going to doctor it up at home by my friend asked to replace it with salmon dinner. Now the salmon was nice and fresh but bland. Asked for some more seasoning and that helped a little. Rice was supposed to have butter, it didn't. Mash potatoes were ok but could have used some salted butter. My friend ordered flounder dinner, he said it was good, added salt and pepper. Over all its a no for me, some older folks may enjoy it.”

”This place was an absolute vibe! I came here for my birthday, and felt so well taken care of. They made me feel really special. The food was absolutely amazing. ”I’d give the food 3/5, the atmosphere and restaurant itself is beautiful bringing this up to 4/5. There is indoor and outdoor seating and by the time my sister and I left they were playing live music. They have a nice big bar with lots of space I definitely would like to go back one night and hangout. My sister got a spicy margarita and it was really good! I enjoyed my pulled pork sandwich, it’s not the best ever but it gets the job done. No complaints. My sister said the Mac and cheese was bad. I tasted it and it’s definitely an acquired taste, I can see why she didn’t like it. Some might say it’s bad, some might say it’s unique. For what you pay food wise I probably wouldn’t bring someone here for dinner, just drinks and watching the live music.”

”Opens late! That's a plus. But the food is so salty and greasy. Korean style chicken was so chewy and fatty. Peach virgin drink tasted like tap water. Price was not reasonable compare to the quality of food. Waitress was kind, but careless about basic things. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.”

”Traveling when gluten free is a challenge but finding little gems like this place is always my favorite thing. The service was great, the food was delicious, only concern was there wasn’t a “seat yourself” sign or anything so we were a tiny bit confused. However the experience from there was awesome! Food was delicious and lots of gluten free options, including a gluten free dessert which was decadent and delicious.”

”Incredible find! I had spotted this place when researching places nearby during our trip to S. Philly. I knew we’d be leaving fairly early in the morning to drive back home Sunday, and I wanted to keep my at-least-one-cheesesteak-a-day streak alive so planned to hit this place on the way out. Rad to integrated into a Home Depot - easy access to I95 and plenty of parking. Got the Rocco’s Special (steak + sausage) and my wife got a breakfast sandwich. Best prices of the weekend, friendliest staff, and incredibly tasty. Had half in the car in the lot and the other half when we stopped for gas. Would definitely go again and the only one I spent the time to review. Oh, and the do take credit card (I was under the impression they didn’t when I first looked when researching).”

”Review for Brunch only. The selection of food, quality of each dish, service and friendliness of the chef were impeccable. Nothing bad here at all. The meal felt exceptionally relaxed. The servers were attentive without being overbearing (a hard balance which was perfectly executed). The sizes of each dish were perfect for allowing a taste of everything. The staff were proactive in making sure every option was always available. The chef in the kitchen was great explaining it each of the roast dishes available and was very friendly. The quality of the coffee is a good way to judge a brunch, and the coffee was great. An exceptional experience. Note: Review does not apply to afternoon tea (my experience of afternoon tea here over a decade ago was poor, I still have yet to find a place outside of the UK that can provide even an average afternoon tea).”

”We tried *Foie gras French onion soup with duck confit *Beet pickled deviled eggs *Pumkin black truffle beignets with apple butter miso aioli *Steamed mussels *Wagyu beef tartar *Ten day dry aged duck *dessert *cocktails Food was great except really overcooked dry aged duck but I will try it again next time. Atmosphere was good and food was great with well balanced seasoning. Our server was very nice and tried her best. The manager worked very professionally when our main course took too long after eating all other dishes and came out overcooked. It was a special night to celebrate a special day but it was not ruined because the manager even though I couldn’t eat their signature dish duck. He was very polite and gentle. I appreciate it. Everything was very tasty!”

”A quaint place on the street corner. The owner/manager is very jovial and engaging with his staff and the customers. It's a nice atmosphere inside, easy to pick a meal from the selections on the monitor display. The specialty slices go for around $5.25 and it's a huge slice. I like coming here for lunch.”
